Little by Little
How SEKA Self-Help Groups Are Sparking Big Change Every Thursday
Every Thursday afternoon in Kadasaya village locally known as Paris a quiet but steady transformation unfolds at SEKA Center. Inside, 50 women and men gather in a circle, led by a SEKA community facilitator. They begin in prayer. They share their burdens and their breakthroughs. Then, they each do something simple but powerful: they drop a few coins into a metal box.
It may be just 500 or 1,000 Rwandan Francs at a time. But together, these small savings grow into something far greater: economic resilience, spiritual fellowship, and hope.
These are SEKA Self-Help Groups: grassroots savings and discipleship circles where community members come together to grow financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Members learn how to budget, save, and launch small businesses rooted in biblical stewardship and mutual accountability.
Judith used to borrow money at crippling interest just to buy cooking oil. Today, thanks to the group savings, she accessed a small loan to start selling handwoven baskets. Within three months, she had repaid the loan, earned a profit, built a better kitchen, and paid school fees for her children.
But for Judith and many others, it’s not just about money. Each meeting includes time for scripture, shared prayer, and encouragement. Members celebrate wins, mourn losses, and strengthen each other in faith. For many, it’s the first time they’ve felt truly seen, supported, and spiritually alive.
